DALI – the standard for digital lighting control

Mr. Thavisak Nimvarapan, Building Assistant Managing Director -Kad Suan Kaew remarked, “When we reviewed other technologies some required intensive wiring and did not allowed for changes once they were installed. Other technologies were software intensive and required to reboot a computer just to turn the lights on. DALI system is flexible and simple. It uses minimal wiring and it has a user-friendly interface. We are the first hotel in Thailand to install DALI”
Mr. Peter Florack, country director of OSRAM said “Modern lighting systems have to do more than just switch light on and off. Nowadays, light is one of the comfort features of a room and part of an energy saving concept in facility management. Whether is setting lighting for a seminar, a projector presentation or a beauty pageant contest the most important thing is to create tailored lighting scenes for maximum impact to the audience and participants. DALI provides lighting scenes that can be stored and recalled simply by the user”.
DALI system also enables feedback messages to be sent to a building management system. For example, a warning light when one lamp is failing. DALI became first available in Germany in 2003. Mrs. Siriprakai Techachukiat, Managing Director of Seven A indicated: “Seven A is committed to making available in Thailand the latest lighting technologies, from lamps with 20,000 hours life (LumiluxPlus) to lighting control systems like DALI. Seven A together with OSRAM provide an integral lighting solution to our customers with the only truly national coverage with branches across the nation and a group of engineers and qualified technicians readily available to be deployed to our customers site for support and consultation”.
DALI is a joint development by the majority of the lighting industry. The aim was to create a uniform standard in the lighting industry. DALI does not define a lighting system. Instead it defines the standard for communication between the controller and the electronic control gear (ECG) – and is therefore included in control gear standard EN 60929 as Annex E4. Interchangeability of ECGs from different manufacturers is therefore guaranteed. Confusion about lots of different proprietary solutions is now a thing of the past. We can just assume that the future for lighting will be simplier and brighter.
