The term "palimpsest", which refers to the process of scraping off a written surface and writing over an older manuscript, paraphrases the painting style used by Munich-based artist Helmut Geier.

While his earlier paintings were free from concreteness, his newer works present an interplay between gesticulatory styles and motifs. In multiple layers applied one over the other, the colours, form and painting structure compete for a harmonious constellation. This results in extremely fragile images in which the motif sometimes appears to be covered by a pictorial veil and relegated to the background, while at other times graphically permeates the surface and is superimposed over the finely painted structure.
