Clean Development Mechanism Projects
New light for climate protection
OSRAM and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) - a success story…
- OSRAM was the world’s first company to receive approval from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for its “Clean Development Mechanism” methodology for energy efficient lighting.
- The sustainable Clean Development Mechanism projects conducted by OSRAM were the first registered projects by the UNFCCC [1].
- OSRAM was the first company worldwide to receive Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates from the UNFCCC [1].
The Clean Development Mechanism was introduced by the Kyoto protocol to allow industrialized countries to economically meet emission reduction goals by conducting projects in developing countries. A complex project cycle has to be gone through from the first project idea until the issuance of CERs.
The CDM projects conducted by OSRAM enable millions of people in developing countries to replace their energy-inefficient incandescent bulbs with high quality energy-saving lamps. Thus, OSRAM helps to reduce CO2 emissions while at the same time transferring environmentally friendly technologies and promoting a sustainable development in less industrialized countries - a true triple win situation.
[1] OSRAM was the first within the CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) lighting sector.
The background
The Clean Development Mechanism allows cost-effective emission reductions. It enables companies from industrialized countries to fulfill their commitments by implementing emission reduction projects in developing countries or by buying certificates generated by such projects.
