Illuminated time bar with LED Technology - Temporary illumination of the Stone Bridge, Regensburg
A time bar reflects the moving history of the town featuring the most important events by means of a vertical white shining line. Each red LED represents one month since the city´s foundation in AD 179 (21.900 months and just as many LEDs).
"Town in Light" – the Stone Bridge
The illumination of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg makes a substantial contribution to Regensburg´s bid to become European Capital of Culture.
Within the scope of the bid, Regensburg’s cultural officer was attempted to highlight the town´s most important buildings and monuments. From end of May, 2004 to the end of June, 2004 the Stone Bridge was in the limelight of the project "Town in Light".
The Stone Bridge in Regensburg, built from 1135 – 1146, is the oldest and largely unchanged conserved stone bridge in Germany. It is a technical and historical monument of European importance and the town´s landmark as a regional and national cultural relic. The bridge was built with the ducal support within 11 years by rich traders from Regensburg, and for a long time, it was way of crossing the Danube between Ulm and Vienna.
The Idea
The core of the concept was the visualization of spatial and temporal aspects of the city of Regensburg and the Stone Bridge by means of a suitable light protection. For this purpose, Regensburg´s history and the bridge were illustrated as a “light time line” along the bridge axis which illustrated the history iof the city of Regenburg.
The highly illumination light points were connected in such a way that every light point represents a month in the history of the city. Once these light points added up, the number of pixels corresponds exactly with the length of the bridge and the period of time, which has passed since the foundation of the city of Regensburg (21,900 months).
The illumination as well should take up the colors of the city arms, red and white.
