Avatars celebrate longer
OSRAM launches "Oktoberfest" in Second Life
To coincide with the start of this year´s Oktoberfest on September 22, 2007 OSRAM is opening its virtual festival in Second Life. At the center of this 3-D scenario is a large beer tent in which people can celebrate as in real life. The OSRAM festival will run in the virtual world for 20 weeks.
Each year the Oktoberfest opens with the ceremonial tapping of the first barrel of beer at the Theresienwiese in Munich; at the same time the OSRAM festival will open in 3-D format in Second Life, the largest virtual world on the web. There is a strong link here. This year, OSRAM has equipped the Hacker-Pschorr tent with energy-saving lamps, helping the organizers save more than 18,000 kWh of electricity. And the illuminated DOT-it gingerbread heart - a Munich invention - will be available again for the second year.
OSRAM´s entry in the virtual world of Second Life is a new venture. Instead of the usual 16 days of the traditional festival, OSRAM´s festival will last a total of 20 weeks. In addition to a large beer tent there will be plenty of fairground rides to enjoy, such as a giant wheel and swing boats. And the company has even thought about appropriate costumes. If you like, you can dress your avatar in traditional leather britches or a dirndl before joining in the virtual fun.
