Flexible pulse laser diodes:
Entering new realms of performance
MUNICH / REGENSBURG – Osram Opto Semiconductors present high-performance pulse laser diodes, emitting 10 to 100 ns short light pulses in the infrared range, currently delivering a power of up to 50 W at 100 ns.
Thanks to the company’s own Nanostack-Technology, the vertical integration of several individual emitters is now possible on a single semiconductor chip. This allows the maximum power of the laser chip to be substantially increased.
The main use of pulse lasers is in sensing and range finding applica-tions , e.g. measurements of separation with multiple senders and re-ceivers. In automotive engineering, laser diodes are being used to cover new ground in intelligent cruise control systems, as well as for monitoring blind spots and occupant sensing. The modules are also suitable for traffic monitoring applications (counting and classification of vehicles, measurements of vehicle separation and vehicle speeds) and for logistical applications, e.g. for monitoring parcel conveyor belts or containers. Another interesting field of application is infrared illumination of objects. A slow-reacting receiver can detect numerous light pulses, which are sufficient to make obstacles visible with an infrared camera in poor lighting conditions, e.g. during night-time driving. The camera can then project the image onto the windscreen via a headup display, thus acting as a night-vision unit.
Pulse lasers operate with standard wavelengths of 850 and 905 nm, and achieve a peak power of 3 to 50 W. The temperature range varies from –40 to +85°C. Hybrid-pulse lasers are also equipped with an inte-grated laser driver for high-speed applications. The lasers only require simple control electronics with supply voltages of less than 20 V. Fur-ther advantages are their compact size, competitive pricing and long lifetime. Fully customized solutions are also possible.
