The new MIDLED package for infra-red components from Osram Opto Semiconductors is suitable for applications that require tightly focused infra-red light but do not have the space for a large component complete with a lens. Such applications include long-range light barriers and distance, rain and steering angle sensors. It combines high optical output with compact dimensions and a narrow beam characteristic.

The integrated die-cast reflector focuses most of the light and emits it in a very narrow angle. The result is a radiant intensity that is around three times as high as that of a TopLED, which means it has a much greater range. At +/-20° the beam angle of the compact MIDLED is tighter than that of the TopLED and lens, which emits light at an angle of +/-25°. This miniaturised component does not require a lens and is just 1.6 mm high. Thanks to cleverly designed contact pads, it can be used either as a top-looker or, by turning through 90°, as a side-looker.

High-quality manufacturing technology based on two-component die casting is used for the entire package, enabling smaller components to be made and offering greater flexibility in reflector design coupled with higher product quality. The miniaturised package is easier to pick and place, offers greater freedom to designers and is suitable for a wide range of chips, from infra-red emitters and detectors to LED chips that emit visible light.

High output and narrow beam characteristic
IR LEDs manufactured in MID technology (moulded interconnect devices) do not need a lens. Thanks to their integrated reflector, they emit tightly focused high-intensity long-range light.
