Recycling Legislation

The WEEE directive 2002/96/EG (waste of electrical and electronic equipment) took effect on February 13, 2003. The principal objective of this EU directive is to prevent electrical and electronic waste in order to reduce the amount of waste and to preserve resources.

Cap Separation Process

OSRAM developed the Cap Separation Process in 1981, through which it was possible for the first time to recycle all substances in used phosphor lamps. Nowadays all substances contained in these lamps can be recycled.

Recycling of rare earth elements

To OSRAM, the recycling of rare earth elements has long been an important issue. Therefore, in 2004 a project was launched to find a procedure for the recovery of rare earth elements from fluorescent lamps.
