Control of 85,000 street lights in Milan with OPTOTRONIC 3DIM electronic control gears

Milan, Italy

To mark the World Expo which started on May 1, 2015, Milan appears in a new light – in every sense of the word: For the first time, an Italian metropolis has opted for a large-scale upgrade of its street lighting to LED lighting. The considerable savings in energy and maintenance, state-of-the-art luminaire design and much better light in the streets of the city is what convinced the city fathers. Optotronic 3DIM electronic control gear from OSRAM is the power behind the new 85,000 street lights.

Power savings of more than 50 % thanks to the AstroDIM function - used on a truly large scale for the first time in Europe

85,000 of the 141,000 street lights replaced in Milan come from the Italian luminaire manufacturer AEC Illuminazione and have the fitting name of “ITALO”. Even when switched off, they enhance Milan's famous streets and squares thanks to their immaculate Italian design. When switched on, their brilliant light provides optimum visibility and at the same time high energy savings. The aim is to achieve power savings of more than 50 % through the switch to LED.

Thanks to this widespread application, the AstroDIM function is used on a truly large scale for the first time in Europe. The control gear's internal astronomical clock, which calculates sunrise and sunset times, allows for the luminaires to be dimmed automatically in stages using either preset or individually programmed values.

OPTOTRONIC 3DIM ensures timed lighting control throughout the night, and optimum LED control

A significant proportion of energy savings is achieved thanks in particular to OSRAM's modern drivers. OPTOTRONIC 3DIM ensures timed lighting control throughout the night, and optimum LED control, especially at high and low temperatures. Among other things, the drivers feature three control and dimming options – from classic bi-phase dimming (StepDIM), or using the integrated astronomical clock (AstroDIM) to integration in digital telemanagement systems via a DALI interface.

Alessandro Cini, CEO at AEC Illuminazione: “There were many good reasons for choosing this OSRAM"

“There were many good reasons for choosing this OSRAM product. Reliable overvoltage protection, a large variety of functions and easy installation, just to name a few. And we are now also using the best technology which is available at the moment as far as energy savings are concerned – and therefore greenhouse gases and the resulting ecological sustainability,” says Alessandro Cini, CEO at AEC Illuminazione. The high overvoltage protection of the device up to 6 kilovolts in protection classes I and II is particularly noteworthy. The successor model 4DIM which is now available even protects up to 8 kilovolts.

According to Hannes Wagner, technical advisor at OSRAM, one of the drivers' considerable advantages is their high flexibility to handle such large projects. “The drivers automatically cover all important control and application options. For AEC, we were also able to significantly simplify the parameterization of the drivers.”

OPTOTRONIC 3DIM drivers are resistant to weather effects, insects and vibrations, and have been designed for a lifetime of up to 100,000 hours of operation

Thanks to their fully cast plastic package, OPTOTRONIC 3DIM drivers are also resistant to weather effects, insects and vibrations, and have been designed for a lifetime of up to 100,000 hours of operation, preparing them for future LED generations and making them comply with all future requirements of the EU Ecodesign of Energy-Using Products Directive.

The upgrade to the new luminaires happened at record speed. Work began in July 2014 and by February 2015 the upgrade had been completed. “We also benefited enormously from our fruitful collaboration with OSRAM and their experience of managing large-scale projects within a short timeframe,” said Cini.
