Light Quiz - Light can make animals look more attractive

Quiz

Some strange correlations can be observed in the animal world: Artificial light, for example, can influence animals’ love lives and drive their behavior in a certain way. But what appears at first glance to be an experiment in affairs of the heart is in reality nothing but an undesirable side effect of civilization.

Animals of a certain species cheat on their partner more often when exposed to artificial light. Which species is it?

a) Raccoon

b) Bat

c) Blue Tit

Answer c) is correct: the Blue Tit

This behavior results from light pollution, i.e. the effect that it does not really get dark at night in our modern world. Stimulated by artificial night light, male blue tits sing much earlier in the morning. Female members of their species usually associate this early singing with a particularly fit and attractive male. That is why they prefer to mate with these early risers – even though the males are only early birds because they live near the edge of a forest which is close to artificial light sources. As an effect of artificial night light, male blue tits become more successful with women and tend to cheat on their partner more often.
