Light quiz – Colorful rings formed around the Moon

The full moon never looks quite the same. On some days it appears clear and silvery, whereas on other days it is surrounded by a kind of brightly shimmering, circular ‘yard’ which may also form a wreath in the colors of a rainbow. At the beginning of the 19th century, the astronomer Joseph von Fraunhofer already researched these optical phenomena, which are also referred to as ‘aureoles’ or ‘coronas’.

Question: Why do colorful rings sometimes form around the Moon?

a) The effect is created by extra-small particles in the Moon's atmosphere.
b) The effect is created by tiny water droplets in higher layers of the Earth's atmosphere.
c) The effect is created by circular magnetic fields in the stratosphere.
