Retail lighting with LEDs – how good lighting solutions can be made even better

Choosing the optimum lighting for retail stores is all about presenting and promoting products in the best possible way and creating a pleasant atmosphere. Because of their excellent color rendering index (CRI), halogen and metal halide lamps are the predominant light sources in conventional retail lighting systems today. We know that their quality aspects can also be perfectly met by the latest LED solutions and costs can be saved at the same time.

Brilliant White and Brilliant Color

Based on the extensive research results from the SSL4EU study, Osram engineers analyzed the spectrum of the metal halide lamp and optimized the LED converter with the aim of achieving a similar color saturation effect. By optimizing the converter and turning it into a “Brilliant Color” converter, engineers at Osram Opto Semiconductors succeeded in increasing the saturation of almost all the colors and they integrated this feature into the Chip-on-board portfolio for professional applications.

The Brilliant Color line of the Soleriq family including this new converter mix is therefore the ideal solution for all lighting applications in which the principal aim is to display colored objects as perfectly as possible. Whether it's tasteful lighting for changing rooms, emphasis on colorful product packaging in supermarkets or appetizing displays of fresh produce, all illuminated objects and products appear in a pure and attractive light thanks to universally improved color saturation.

What’s more, the light from LEDs has neither UV nor IR components that can damage illuminated objects, and their color spectrum has a considerably smaller proportion of short-wave blue light. Objects illuminated by LEDs therefore retain their original colors for longer.

TEN° Binning

Talking about color quality there is another important aspect which needs to be mentioned here.

The starting point for development activities at Osram Opto Semiconductors was that two LEDs with the exact same color coordinates in the CIE 1931 2° color space could still exhibit noticeably different white tones. One reason is that the small rods that are responsible for color perception in our eyes are not evenly distributed. This leads to different color perceptions even with LEDs in 1 SDCM binning with conventional metrics. This problem has been known and researched by scientists for many decades. However the results of their research have never been applied to general lighting. Osram Opto Semiconductors has now changed all that.

The new TEN° binning from Osram Opto Semiconductors provides the basis for unprecedented color consistency for white LEDs which are used for example as single-LED light sources in spotlights and downlights. To achieve this the current standard CIE 1931 2° xy color space has been supplemented with CIE 2015 10° u‘v‘, recently developed by the International Commission on Illumination and implemented by Osram Opto Semiconductors as 10° binning. TEN° is available in the third generation of the Soleriq S 13.

Cost-effective LED solution

If the focus is more on costs, a CAS cluster arrangement (Chip Arrays in an SMD package) is a good alternative. This provides cost-effective background light as well as eye-catching accents for retail stores.

The CAS clusters are modules in which cost-effective high-volume LEDs from the Duris S family are soldered on small metal core boards. The external dimensions of the boards and the electrical contact surfaces can be designed so that the finished module, like a conventional CoB LED, is compatible with holders and CoB-typical accessories readily available on the market, such as lenses and reflectors. In most applications the structure of the cluster is not at all visible. The light is extremely uniform and not a collection of dots as the arrangement of the individual LEDs in the cluster would suggest.

The CAS cluster modules are considerably less expensive than conventional CoB LEDs. The savings enable the costs for the luminaire to be reduced or luminous efficacy to be significantly increased. The CAS clusters are perfect for non-imaging luminaires with broad emission characteristics such as downlights.
