More than a decade ago, OSRAM introduced the first 905 nm laser to the market. Today, it is the most commonly used wavelength in LiDAR solutions due to its reliability and availability. In fact, ams OSRAM has well over 10 million chips already in the field – without a single chip defect.

In the beginning of 2021, OSRAM announced a newly developed chip design for edge-emitting lasers (EEL) that drastically improves the wavelength stability at operating temperatures of up to 125°C, typical for automotive applications. This technological milestone in infrared lasers allows a much smaller wavelength filter to be used on the detector - significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio and the overall performance of LiDAR systems.

LiDAR technology is particularly valuable in autonomous vehicle applications. LiDAR works by sending short pulses of infrared light into the surroundings. When the light hits an object, it is reflected and registered by a sensor.
