Mini projectors with maximum power

In this digital age, we carry around pictures, videos and presentations on our smartphones and tablets wherever we go. But when it comes to presenting our concepts to colleagues or customers we need a bigger stage. Thanks to ever smaller, lighter and more powerful mobile projectors or beamers, we now have the ability to give professional presentations even on business trips or to turn the garden at home into an open-air cinema. The small projectors accompany us on the streets as well: Integrated in head-up displays of cars they provide us with important information within our field of vision.
An innovative product from Osram Opto Semiconductors enables projectors to be reduced even further in size and made even more versatile. At the same time, the light-emitting surface is even more precise. The new 1mm2 and 2mm2 high-power chip versions of the Osram Ostar Compact LED extend the portfolio of the high-tech company.
Thanks to an innovative fabrication process, the new generation of the Osram Ostar Compact has a particularly low profile. The overall height of the package is only 750µm. Unlike their predecessors, they are also pure surface emitters. The new Osram Ostar Compact LEDs also have a precisely defined light emission surface, which corresponds exactly to the installed chip surface. This means that customers can place their optics very close to the light emitting surface, which significantly increases system efficiency. High efficiency is particularly important for mobile projectors so that maximum operating time can be achieved in battery mode.
The 1mm2 version of the Osram Ostar Compact is suitable for projection systems with up to 150lm system brightness. These include especially small or energy-saving systems such as Ultra Mobile, Ultra-Low Power or Pico projectors. The version with the 2mm2 chip can be used in applications with a system brightness of up to 300lm and is therefore suitable for mobile HD projectors, for example, where image quality is a crucial factor. But Osram Ostar Compact is also good at visualizing important information in cars. In head-up displays, for example, it helps to present navigation instructions directly in the driver’s field of view so drivers don’t have to take their eyes off the road.
The packages for the two versions of the Osram Ostar Compact have the same footprint of 3.0mm x 3.0mm x 0.75mm. The LEDs can therefore be integrated in various product designs. The chips used are high-current chips which can handle currents of up to 3A per mm2. The ceramic package ensures a low thermal resistance of only 4.1K/W. Osram Ostar Compact will be marketed with single-chip LEDs in red, green and blue. The 1mm2 version is already available in blue, red and green, and the 2mm2 version in green. The 2mm2 LEDs in red and blue will follow in the spring of 2018.
