Osram Opto Semiconductors’ photonics innovation is on full display in its 550 aperture PowerBoost Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). Chip products supporting the dual junction ( Part: V00155) and triple junction ( Part: V00156) technology were released in early 2021. The high-optical power product is a finalist for the Prism Award for Photonics Innovation in the category of vision technology. Each year, the international Prism Awards honors the best new optics and photonics products on the market that are making a difference, solving problems, and improving life through photonics.
Osram’s PowerBoost VCSEL technology, with its leading optical power and efficiency, as well as increased power densities, is a game changer for future LiDAR developments. High slope efficiencies significantly reduce pulsing forward current, allowing it to reach the same optical power at a lower current as compared to standard, single junction VCSELs. Greater efficiency of 60 percent power conversion with a single VCSEL, and 53 percent with an array, reduces thermal load. Finally, high-power density results in dramatically reduced chip and package size, enabling simpler designs and system architecture.
