Two Osram general lighting products receive Product Innovation Awards

Osconiq S 3030 Quantum Dot and Oslon Square honored by Architectural Products magazine for beauty and sustainability

2019 Architectural Product Magazine’s Product Innovation Awards

Architectural Product Magazine’s Product Innovation Awards (PIA) recognizes the most innovative architectural-related products on the market, including the companies behind the components. The award shines a light on industry leaders, like Osram Opto Semiconductors, that are providing products that improve our world.

“Building on the success of last year’s program, our ninth edition of the awards proves commercial building manufacturers are committed to, and are working arduously toward, delivering more sustainable products, as well as products that deliver better performance, life and affordability,” said Jim Crockett, Editorial Director of Architectural Products Magazine.

Osram’s Osconiq S 3030 Quantum Dot (QD) is a groundbreaking product for the general lighting market. The product’s conversion technology delivers outstanding efficacy, even at high color rendering indexes (CRI). In fact, Osram’s unique QD phosphor solution enables CRI 90 light quality at 173 lm/W at 3000K, which is best-in-class in 0.2 W high-performance LEDs. The component was designed to provide excellent color rendering for area lighting and downlight applications.

QDs are nanometer-sized semiconductor particles that can emit light of a specific wavelength when blue LED light is applied to them. The wavelength or color depends on the size of the QDs. For example, two nanometer QDs produce blue light, whereas seven nanometer sized particles emit red. When manufacturing conventional white LEDs, the main objectives are efficacy and product quality. Achieving both at the same time is particularly challenging, especially with very high CRI. QDs can solve this problem. The great advantage of using these nanoparticles is that the existing LED manufacturing processes remain the same. QDs are simply used instead of conventional phosphors when the converter material is applied.

The Oslon Square family from Osram Opto Semiconductors features high efficacy and superior robustness. High programming flexibility means that the light output can be optimized for various applications. The compact 3mm × 3mm component offers excellent reliability and long lifetime.

The Oslon Square was developed to provide best-in-class Color over Angle (CoA) performance, while still maintaining superior efficacy. It is available in both CRI 80 and CRI 90 options. Traditional, high power, white LEDs typically sacrifice color quality for raw lumens to maximize their efficacy. While this might be acceptable for certain outdoor applications, many manufacturers are finding color uniformity to be a large differentiator when it comes to their fixture quality indoors. This is especially beneficial in narrow beam applications such as retail and gallery spaces, where an even field of light is required.
