22 September 2025 – LightingEurope statement on RoHS lamp exemptions (update)
Key facts
- Exemptions remain valid / Renewal applications submitted
- LightingEurope has formally applied to renew these exemptions, ensuring continuity beyond 2027.
- High-brightness projector lamps (e.g. P-VIP® > 2000 ANSI lumen) are covered under RoHS exemption 4(f)-II, renewal request from August 2025 pending (exemption remains valid during renewal evaluation even past expiry dates).
- Low-brightness projector and entertainment lamps (e.g. SIRIUS HRI® < 2000 ANSI lumen) are covered under RoHS exemption 4(f)-I, which remains valid during the renewal evaluation.
- No immediate regulatory change
- These lamps are still permitted under EU RoHS and Mercury Regulation frameworks.
- RoHS exemptions remain valid during renewal evaluation, even past expiry dates. If denied, a 12-18 month transition period applies.
- Spare parts clarification
- Spare parts remain critical for maintaining EEE functionality and are covered under RoHS provisions.
- UK Alignment
- Five RoHS exemption requests have also been submitted for prolongation to the UK-DEFRA authorities in 2025 (similar to EU exemptions 1(f)-I, 2(b)(4)-II, 4a-I, 4(f)-II and 4(f)-IV).

- No immediate change to key projector & entertainment exemptions: Existing mercury exemptions under RoHS still remain valid during EU review - including for projector and entertainment lamps.

Key facts
- Still permitted: Ultra high-performance lamps continue to be allowed under current EU regulations.
- No new mercury restrictions: Recent EU reviews have not placed additional restrictions on mercury-containing projector or entertainment lamps.
- RoHS Directive:
- High brightness projector lamps Exempt under RoHS 4(f)-II — valid until 24 February 2027.
- Low brightness projector & entertainment lampsExempt under RoHS 4(f)-I — currently not restricted, with the exemption valid until a decision is made. The renewal application was submitted on time.
- Ongoing industry action: The lighting industry is actively preparing renewal applications to maintain these exemptions beyond 2027.
