TGA-GCMS - Thermo Gravimetric Analysis coupled with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry

TGA-GC-MS is a technique where thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) is coupled to a GC-MS.

In the TGA a sample is heated and the mass loss as a function of temperature is measured. The volatile organic compounds released during this measurement are transferred to a GC/MS apparatus for separation, identification and quantification.

The knowledge of the chemical nature of the volatile decomposition products helps to understand the underlying chemical reactions of the decomposition process.

Applications

  • Analysis of unknown rubbers, adhesives, plastics
  • Evaluation of thermal outgassing in model processes
  • Screening of additives, plasticizers in polymeric materials
