TGA-MS – Thermo Gravimetric Analysis coupled with Mass Spectrometry

The TGA-MS coupling combines the features of thermogravimetric analysis with mass spectrometry. The direct coupling of the two techniques without separation method like GC has certain advantages like real time identification of the gases emitted by the TGA. Compared to a similar coupling technique, the TGA-FTIR-coupling, the mass spectrometry is by far more sensitive and versatile regarding the identification of organic compounds.

In the TGA a sample is heated and the mass loss as a function of temperature is measured. The volatile organic compounds released during this measurement are transferred to a mass spectrometer for identification.

The knowledge of the chemical nature of the volatile decomposition products helps to understand the underlying chemical reactions of the decomposition process.
