O-HUB™
The heart of the OSRAM off-grid solution is the energy hub. Its most important function is recharging the O-LAMPs and O-BOXes. Battery charging services have been available in Off-Grid areas for some time, but the OSRAM solution offers added value for its customers and the environment. All power for the charged batteries and the other requirements of the O-HUB is delivered by photovoltaic panels. Nearly 10 kW peak power is installed on the present Hubs – providing CO2-free energy.
With the OSRAM solution, the lighting products are continually exchanged for the customer – to ensure that every lamp given out by an O-HUB delivers the quality people expect from OSRAM, rigorous maintenance and quality control is essential. This also represents an advantage compared to other solutions considering only the product – proper maintenance ensures a long service life, and the O-HUB takes care of recycling afterwards.
The hubs were originally designed to provide only lighting infrastructure, but it was quickly realized that the relevant regions could also benefit from other services. Thus, the O-HUBs offer facilities for charging compatible mobile telephones.
Also, we are bringing our competence in water purification to bear. Integrated units have been installed where suitable water is filtered in several steps, and bacteria and viruses are eliminated with OSRAM Puritec UVC - lamps. Up to 3000 liters per day can be purified to drinking water quality.
Purifying drinking water is a valuable service – not only to the communities in which the O-HUBs are located; there is reason to believe that the mountain gorillas of the Virunga National Park will appreciate the service as well.
