High-perfomance laser diodes for continuous wave operation:
A new design to bring more optical power
MUNICH / REGENSBURG – Osram Opto Semiconductors present laser diodes (CW) in a metal housing (single-emitters), which depending on the design and operating mode can reach a higher total output power of 1.5 to 4 W.
This was achieved due to a reduced thermal resistance made possible with a modified mechanical design. The laser die now sits directly on the copper base plate.
The laser diodes can be used for the pumping of solid-state lasers and double-clad fiber amplifiers/lasers, for material treatment (e.g. plastic welding, surface heating and hardening, soldering) and for illuminating photosensitive printing plates in computer-to-plate processes. In medical technology applications the modules can be used for skin treatment and hair removal. This type of laser diode can also be used as a voltage supply or energy source for electronic circuits and sensors. Here the optical energy of the laser is converted by a photoelement into electrical energy. This technology is particularly useful in applications where conventional mains supply circuits or batteries cannot be used, for instance in high-voltage transmission systems.
High-performance laser diodes (CW) have a lifetime of typically over 50,000 hours and emit at the standard wavelengths of 808, 940 and 980 nm. They achieve high optical performance with excellent efficiency in continuous wave (CW) operation. The high electrooptical efficiency is greater than 40%.
The new design of the laser diodes has led to an improved beam quality, and therefore to higher power densities. This results in greater efficiency when the light is coupled into a standard multimode fiber. Compact design and numerous additional functions like temperature and wavelength control or optional FC fiber connectors mean that the high-performance laser diodes are predestined for a broad range of applications.
