MultiLEDs now also available for large screens:
LEDs leap the 17" hurdle
6leadMultiLEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors can now provide wonderfully bright and uniform backlighting for 17" displays. These LEDs have much better colour brilliance than conventional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps and make pictures look much more vibrant. Each colour can be controlled individually.
MultiLEDs outperform previous LED designs in terms of their homogeneity and their brightness. The improved package allows the LEDs to be arranged very close together and flat on the board, with the result that the light is distrib- uted more evenly. In conjunction with the higher luminous efficacy of the new generation of LEDs, these MultiLEDs are now suitable for 17" displays.
These new light sources have numerous advantages over cold-cathode fluorescent lamps in addition to their greater brilliance. The colour temperature, for example, can be adjusted by combining the individual colours so the display can be tailored to the particular preferences of the user. If you find the picture a little too red, you can easily adjust it. Because of these control options, the brightness and colour of the display remain constant, which is important for example for picture editing or graphics work.
Because the light emitting diodes are resistant to vibrations they can be used in extremely harsh ambient conditions in industry or in aircraft. LEDs not only offer better performance, they are kind to the environment as they do not contain any mercury.
The LED package now sits on six legs instead of four so it can better dissipate the heat. This will benefit not only 17" displays but also all the smaller displays, such as the 7" displays used in cars. They do not require any additional cooling and can therefore be installed in dashboards and also in the driver and passenger seat headrests for rear-seat entertainment.
