OLED displays for high-end audio mixing desks:
Pictiva for sharp displays
The familiar theme tune starts up, the soundtrack bursts into life and the latest cult film starring James Bond, agent 007, hits the screen. The film provides a battery of special effects, with a stunning blend of action, drama and eroticism. The sound designer has spent hours at the mixing desk in the studio matching the pictures to the music and the sound effects. Working such long hours at a mixing desk is tiring work, but help is at hand. Fairlight is now equipping the displays on its largest Constellation-XT audio mixing system with organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) from the Pictiva range from Osram Opto Semiconductors.
The 72 integrated displays for the wealth of information in the mixing area of the inline channel panel (ILP) are razor-sharp and provide excellent contrast. With a viewing angle of up to 160°, they can even be read from the side. This brilliant clarity is provided by Pictiva 96x64 pixel graphic displays in yellow. With a contrast of 100:1, polymer-based OLED displays show the sound channel settings on the ILP crystal clear. Alfred Felder, head of OLED business at Osram in San José, California, is tremendously enthusiastic: "This OLED application underlines our commitment and our ability to present a broad range of OLED displays. We offer these solutions for the audio engineering sector, a market that is rapidly growing. We shall continue to develop our products to meet the needs of this market."
The Pictiva product family currently comprises three graphic displays in 128 x 64, 96 x 64 and 80 x 48 pixel formats, each in three defined monochrome colours (yellow, green and orange). All three have 16 grey scales and luminances of 70 to 100 cd/m². A lifespan of more than 10,000 hours of operation under normal ambient conditions is certainly enough for quite a few soundtracks.
